After
the successful single release of Broken Lines from the CD "Folis
Paradyce"on
U.S. AAA Radio in the secondary markets, Quintessential Records
was gearing up for the second single release when an Act of God
changed marketing strategy. Sherwood was at the Mark Taper Forum
on a Saturday night in downtown Los Angeles watching the musical "Ragtime",
when his pager watch beemed the message, "Princess Di Dies".
That night all television stations covered the news of her untimely
death, playing inappropriate music behind the expose's. In 1981,
Sherwood had written a romantic ballad for the modern day fairy
tale wedding of Prince Charles to Lady Diana, entitled, "Lady
Diana". He pulled out the old cassette, re-wrote the lyrics
to be a dedication to the late Princess, sequenced and recorded
the orchestration on Sunday. By midnight, he was recording the
vocals and classical guitar. Monday morning, he did three mixes
to dat tape and took the tape with him to a recording session
at Bell Sound Studios, Hollywood, CA. While in one room doing
a recording session, in another room, Engineer - Buddy Halligan
was mastering the best mix of "A Tribute to Princess Diana".
Sherwood's intention was to send the mix to the television stations
for the on-going expose's, but also sent a copy off to WBLG,
Bowling Green, KY, station in NY, and 104.3 Los Angeles. All
three stations had heavy call-ins from women crying. Henceforth,
the next release by Sherwood Ball. Part of the proceeds of the
recording went to The Princess Diana Fund in UK.
After the radio stations had run their course on "The Candle
in the Wind" and "A Tribute to Princess Diana",
the radio station programmers were calling the promoters asking "What
next from Sherwood Ball?". This was now early November.
Sherwood had a musical track of a song from Steve Porcaro and
wrote the song, "Dreamin' of Christmas in L.A.", a
funny song with an infectious groove. Sherwood then teamed up
with R&B/Pop producer-co-writer, Peter Roberts, to record
and produce the rest of what was to be the EP, Dreamin' of Christmas
in L.A.
Even though it's the title of the CD, there is only ONE Christmas
song on the EP. |
